This 55-minute lesson will guide students through labeling a blank map of Europe from 1919, which reflects the border changes implemented after WWI. Students will be placed in their WWII Groups to label and then analyze this map, do a small amount of online research and finally answer a series of questions to facilitate their understanding of the geographical reasons and causes of this war in Europe.

This lesson was created for an 11th grade US History class in rural Kern County with 4 English Learners with bridging proficiency level.

1) Project slide 1. Tell students they will be looking and working on a map of Europe today, the project slide 2, and read their learning goal.

2) Project slide 3, and introduce their first activity–notice and wonder.

3) Project slide 4 and Introduce the video–This is a 4-Minute video showing the Nazi occupation of Europe from the late 1930s through 1945. As you watch the video, I want you to think about some things you notice and wonder about. Be ready to share with your partner after the video. what do you notice, what do you wonder? Show the video.

4) Partner Talk (5 mins)

After the video ends, ask students to share their thoughts and wonders with their partner. Inform them they will have 5 minutes, and afterward, you will ask for volunteers to share their thoughts and wonders with the class.

Have students complete this activity with a partner.

This activity involves a simulation map of WWII. It is helpful if you had students complete a map of Europe at the end of WWI when the borders changed dramatically and included the addition of several Eastern European countries. If they have access to that map, it will help them in this lesson.

There are two different options you can use. The first is a YouTube video linked on the slide deck OR the Powerpoint file provided in this lesson’s resources. I opted to use the YouTube source because it “plays” nicer with Google, however, the PowerPoint file to me is more impressive because it includes sound effects and the user can control the tempo. You will need to click to show each advance and retreat. This file in Google Slides is helpful because of the detail the author provided in the speaker notes.

*The Powerpoint file was created in the early 2000s, so the technology is a little archaic, but still impressive. I prefer this one over this resource because you can control the timing of the advances/retreats, the sound effects match the animation, and it shows the post-WWII map at the end.

6) Project Slide 6, and introduce this activity to the students by reading the instructions on the slide deck. If you are using an LMS you may decide to assign this map through it, otherwise, the link in the slide deck will force a copy to each student and they can submit the link through your LMS.

7) Open up the link and go over the map key, and read questions #1 and #2 (see image below). Show students how to select a text box and drag it into the country. The blue box should be empty when they are finished. There are three map resources provided on slide 6 and underneath the map. Tell students they have 30 minutes to complete the map (start the timer on the slide).

8) After completing the map, students will answer questions looking at their completed map. They will need to do some online research to completely answer the questions.

9) When students are finished, have them get into their WWII Group to compare their answers.

Students are to complete this assignment with their partner.

This assignment has two options. You can have students fill in and color a paper map, which will take them approximately one period to complete, OR you can have them do the drag-and-drop option that is in Google Drawing and assigned in this slide deck. If you choose Google Drawing, then you may decide to assign it through your LMS. The map is provided as a PDF in case you’d like students to do it on paper.

10) Once students have finished their map, and shared their answers with their WWII Group, get the class' attention to go over the answers together. Project slide 7.

11) Ask for student volunteers to share their answers, allowing time for students to adjust their own responses if needed.

12) Project slide 8 to wrap up the lesson.

13) Slide 9 is provided in case you have extra time. This is a 7 minute video that helps to answer today's learning goal.
