Frank Netter was born in 1906 and originally wanted to be an artist, but he pursued medicine to satisfy his family. Ironically, it was the Great Depression that launched his art career; when he opened a surgical practice in 1933, patients were scarce and often couldn't pay, so he supplemented his income with medical illustration.
