The story was inspired by the real-life voyage of the Kon-Tiki , a primitive raft used by Thor Heyerdahl to prove ancient trans-oceanic travel was possible. [S3E15] Explorers

Production designers gave the ship a "Jules Verne" aesthetic, using wood and brass to make it feel tactile and ancient. Prove that ancient Bajorans could reach Cardassia Prime
