( The Brothers Karamazov ), published in 1880 , is the final novel by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky . It is widely considered his masterpiece and one of the supreme achievements in world literature.

The story is set in the 19th-century Russian town of Skotoprigonyevsk and centers on the dysfunctional Karamazov family.

Dostoevsky died in early 1881, less than four months after the novel's completion.
