The plot begins with Nobita rescuing a stray dog named (meaning "One") and a cat named Zubu . To give these abandoned pets a safe home, Doraemon and Nobita use a time machine to travel 300 million years into the past—well before humans existed—and use the "Evolution-Degeneration Beam" to help the animals build their own society.
